Alarming Food Importation Rate in Nigeria
Import bill for food in Nigeria is exceptionally high and it is growing at an unsustainable rate of 11% per annum. Ironically, Nigeria is importing what it can produce in abundance. This trend is hurting Nigerian farmers and displacing local production.
The situation was further stressed by the Minister of Agriculture, Dr. Akinwunmi Adesina, when he made it known to the public in Abeokuta, at the opening session of the two-day Ogun State Investors’ forum, that Nigeria now tops food-importing nations’ list.
