Raymond Guthrie, Board Observer

Raymond Guthrie is a Senior Partner in the Investment Team at the Global Innovation Fund (GIF). In his current role, Raymond manages a team of Investment Directors and Associates, developing and structuring risk capital investments and grants to support innovative organizations striving to create measurable large scale impact in the developing world. Prior to joining GIF, he served as a Principal on the Innovation Investment team at the Skoll Foundation. Here he invested in African, Asian and Latin American countries, building a portfolio of grants, equity investments, loans and guarantees with an estimated value of $41.6 million. His work at the Skoll Foundation supported social entrepreneurs within the agriculture, education, healthcare, livelihoods, and clean energy sectors. He also managed Skoll’s partnerships with development agencies and foreign governments, including a $50 million co-funding partnership with USAID focused on investing in social entrepreneurs with proven innovations. Moreover, he developed the investment strategy and process for making dispassionate evidence-based investments from Skoll to social entrepreneurs that had the greatest amount of impact evidence and were the closest to driving large-scale change.

Prior to joining Skoll, Raymond was a Foreign Service Officer at the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), where he initially served as a Private Enterprise Officer within the USAID India Mission. During his time in India, Raymond managed an early-stage funding program, the ‘Millennium Alliance’, which focused on supporting Indian social entrepreneurs that have innovative solutions for development challenges within the clean energy, agriculture and health sectors. He later worked within USAID’s newest entity, the U.S. Global Development Lab. Before joining USAID, Raymond worked within the equities department at Calvert Investments, one of the largest socially responsible investment funds in the world. As an Investment Analyst at Calvert, Raymond was part of a team that managed approximately $5 billion in public and private equity investments. Prior to this, Raymond worked as an attorney within the general counsel’s office at Calvert, structuring the funds domestic and international investments.

Raymond studied International Economics and International Business Law (BBA) at the University of Miami. He also obtained his Juris Doctor (JD), International Business and Securities, at Howard University’s Law School.
